Brakes
Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
The affected Kia models are being recalled because the brake light switch can fail prematurely, resulting in the loss of brake light operation as well as concerns with other electrical systems including: Cruise control, push-button start feature, shifter, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. Dealers will replace the brake light switch to correct this concern.
Kia will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles during May 2013. If you are experiencing problems with the brake lights, cruise control, gear shifter, push button start, or Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system system, or if you don't receive recall notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. They may ask for your vehicle identification number (VIN), so please have it handy when you call. The Kia recall number is SC098.
