THIS COULD CAUSE THE PARKING LOCK SYSTEM NOT TO ENGAGE, AFTER THE TRANSMISSION IS PLACED IN THE PARK ("P") POSITION. IF THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON AN INCLINE, AND THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT ENGAGED, THIS COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ROLLAWAY CONDITION.
289 vehicles may have been built with an incorrectly manufactured automatic transmission parking pawl guide plate. This could cause the transmission park lock system not to engage as expected. If the vehicle was parked on an incline and the parking brake was not engaged, a roll-away condition could occur, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will repair and replace the automatic transmission guide plate. The Ford recall number is 05S39.
Ford will notify owners of affected vehicles beginning November 18, 2005. If you are experiencing problems with the transmission park lock, or you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. It's helpful to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) when you call.
