Parking Brake Fails Safety Standards May Cause Unintended Vehicle Movement

WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE IS RELEASED, THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE UNINTENDED BRAKING WHEN ACCELERATING, DECELERATING, OR COASTING, AND A NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD OCCUR INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Certain sport utility vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Safety Standard # 135 "Passenger Car Brake Systems" To meet the standard, vehicles must not move for 5 minutes when stopped on a steep hill with the parking brake applied and the vehicle in neutral. Some of these vehicles failed this test. When the parking brake is released the driver may notice unintended braking while accelerating, decelerating or coasting. This could lead to unintended vehicle movement and cause an accident. The dealer will inspect each rear parking brake caliper and replace free of charge if slippage is noticed. GM will notify customers of affected vehicles beginning November 14, 2005. If you have not been contacted, find parking brake problems and think your vehicle falls under this recall. How long it takes to fix a recall depends on many different factors:

How many vehicles are affected by the recall? How complex is the problem to fix? How many different parts are involved in the repair? Are the repair parts available? Has the dealership received the parts for the repair yet? Do dealership technicians have training to conduct the specific repair? How many recalled cars can the dealer repair each day (while also doing their daily service business)?

Recalls are unrelated to your warranty coverage. Any recalls that are issued for safety-related items on your vehicle will be repaired by the vehicle manufacturer at no cost to you. Even if your vehicle's warranty has expired and you are not the original owner of the vehicle, you are still eligible to have any open safety recalls on your vehicle repaired.
