Transmission is not engaging in reverse or drive, but when you try a few times it engages but reverse is making a big noise "clunck" every time the reverse is engaged, sound like transmission will brake.
What makes this problem better or worse?
IT DOES ALL THE TIME YOU ENGAGE REVERSE
How long has your 2008 Smart Fortwo had this problem?

All I can suggest is to have the fluid checked to ensure it is clean and full. Otherwise, I suspect some kind of internal mechanical concern. Either way, hands on testing by a local expert is needed.
