Why won't my land rover lr2 hse 2008 Drivers side door handle cap stay on?

As my key fob decided to stop working I had to open the driver's side door manually by prying off the door handle cap off and opening the door manually. Now the door handle cap won't stay on. Any idea why?

How long has your 2008 Land Rover LR2 had this problem?

A couple of months but it's gotten worse.
