Toyota MR2 Spyder intermittent shifting problem with drive lights affecting movement on Toyota MR2 Spyder

Problem overview

Some Toyota MR2 Spyder owners report experiencing intermittent shifting problems with the Sequential Manual Transmission (SMT), including noticeable lag when shifting gears, particularly from first to second, which can be hazardous during acceleration onto busy roads. Symptoms of SMT issues may include delayed engagement, jerking or shuddering during acceleration, a burning smell from the transmission, and dashboard warning lights indicating a transmission malfunction. Additionally, some owners encounter difficulty shifting gears, such as grinding noises or the transmission getting stuck in gear. Problems with the shift lever position sensor can also prevent the transmission from shifting into neutral while driving, potentially generating an 820 code. To temporarily resolve these shifting issues, some owners have reported success in replacing components like the Hydraulic Pump Assembly and Shift Stick/Assembly at a Toyota dealership. Furthermore, local Toyota dealerships can provide the appropriate fluid for the SMT transmission and assist with fluid changes to help address related concerns.
