Nissan LEAF clicking noise from front axle during acceleration and braking, possibly due to insufficient lubrication and improperly torqued nuts on Nissan LEAF

Problem overview

Some Nissan LEAF owners report experiencing a clicking noise from the front axle during acceleration and braking, which may be related to insufficient lubrication and improperly torqued nuts. This clicking sound could be attributed to worn-out constant velocity (CV) joints that allow the wheels to spin while the axle moves with the suspension. To address this issue, applying Molykote® M77 grease to the hub bearing surfaces without removing the axle may help reduce the noise. Additionally, it is crucial for owners to ensure that the lug nuts for all four wheels are properly torqued to 113 N m in a diagonal pattern before conducting any diagnostic procedures. Over-tightening the axle nut can also contribute to the clicking noise, necessitating adjustments until the sound ceases. Furthermore, the noise might stem from the interface where the CV axle contacts the back of the bearing, particularly the collar rather than the splines. Addressing these concerns can aid in resolving the clicking noise in the Nissan LEAF.
