Kia Soul requires gas to start after refueling on Kia Soul

Problem overview

Some Kia Soul owners report experiencing starting issues after refueling, which may be linked to problems with the purge valve or charcoal canister in the fuel system. These difficulties can arise when the purge valve allows gasoline vapors into the engine during refueling, potentially flooding it and making it hard to start. Additionally, a stuck-open purge valve can lead to rough engine performance right after refueling. If the ORVR valve has failed, it may cause gas to saturate the charcoal canister, further complicating starting. Overfilling the fuel tank can also result in raw fuel entering the EVAP system, contributing to these starting problems. To mitigate these issues, some owners find it helpful to push the pedal to the floor while starting, avoid filling the tank completely, or use carb cleaner or starter fluid in the intake. It is recommended that affected owners have their purge valve, charcoal canister, and related components inspected and potentially replaced to ensure reliable engine operation after refueling.
