Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Manual transmission fluid provides lubrication and acts as a coolant for the transmission. Gear oil is the most commonly used fluid, though some manual transmissions use regular engine oil or automatic transmission fluid.

Why Should It Be Serviced?

It's important to have the manual transmission serviced at the manufacturer's recommend interval. Transmission performance can be affected by dirty or old transmission fluid. Lack of service may result in one or more of these symptoms:

  • Grinding or strange noises from the transmission
  • Problems shifting gears

When Should It Be Serviced?

The manual transmission fluid is commonly replaced as part of a 60,000 mile service. Please consult your owners manual for the recommendation for your specific vehicle.

How It's Done

To replace the manual transmission fluid, the transmission drain plug is removed, allowing the fluid to drain from the transmission. The drain plug is reinstalled and the transmission is filled with fresh fluid.
