Chevrolet Equinox oil leak due to blown rear main seal from frozen PCV on Chevrolet Equinox

Problem overview

Some Chevrolet Equinox owners report experiencing oil leaks due to a blown rear main seal, which can be caused by a frozen PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system. This issue may arise when frozen water accumulates in the air cleaner housing where the PCV hose connects, leading to excess pressure buildup that ultimately blows the seal. Owners are particularly vulnerable during extreme cold weather conditions, as condensate may not drain properly from the PCV tube to the intake chamber, resulting in crankcase over-pressurization and seal failure. Additionally, some owners find that a plugged PCV valve can exacerbate the problem, leading to costly repairs. A design flaw in the GM engineering of the PCV valve system can also contribute to this issue, as it may cause condensation to freeze, creating high pressure in the crankcase and pushing oil out through the blown rear main seal. It is crucial for Chevrolet Equinox owners to be aware of these potential issues and take preventive measures, especially in cold weather, to avoid expensive repairs.
