Buick Rainier Problem Report

Buick Rainier Erratic Fuel Gauge Operation

(61 reports)

The fuel level sensor in the fuel tank may fail causing erratic fuel gauge operation. Our technicians tell us that on high mileage vehicles you may wish to replace the complete fuel pump module assembly if this condition occurs.

On certain 2005 - 2007 vehicles, General Motors has provided a special service policy covering the fuel level sensor, agreeing to pay 50% of the repair cost. This coverage extends for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the original "in service" date of the vehicle. Please contact your local GM dealer for more information.

Eratic fuel gauge after filling up. Low fuel light and alarm sound but gauge sometimes goes back to full. How hard is it to change this sensor and how much should I expect it to cost if I take it somewhere to have it done? -
We had this fuel sensor problem only about a year after we got this car. At first Gm sent out notification about the problem and offered to fix it for 50% of the cost. So we just kept track of milage when we filled up. Then at about 94000 miles They sent out a notice again in July 2013 that they would cover the whole cost up to 120000 miles, so we went and had it fixed no problem. If any of you paid the 50% to have this done they have a form you can fill out so you can get reimbursed.Ask your dealer. Now if they would just do something about the stinking air suspension that keeps leaking ! No more GM for me after this one. Anybody want to buy a lowrider? -
After filling up, the gage will read empty, but will eventaully read correctly. I'm resetting my trip odometer each time I fill up just in case though! -
Fuel sensor slowly failed - now permanently on empty. 80,000 is approximate - I have been living with this issue for over a year since I cannot pay to get it fixed. -
Same problem...... -
Fuel gauge shows empty when full, and bounces around up and down after that. -
replaced at my cost got recall letter after passed mileage allowance -
Fuel level sensor has long periods of time that fail to correctly display the correct level of fuel in the Terraza gas tank. Today was a first in that the faulty sensor caused the check engine light to come on. The P043 P code indicated that the fuel level sensor has a circuit high input. Now, it can't pass a smog test and I must have the problem corrected instead of just living it as a known problem. This problem started early for this vehicle, for the past 5 years now. -
Fuel guage shows empty after filling, sometimes bounces up and down, now it shows empty all the time. -
Fuel guage stopped working. Dealer said it would be over $500 to fix without telling me about the "recall" I did the research & called back. Fixed within a day. -
fuel gage stopped working -
the problem starts when the weather is hot, I think. It is chronic, the engine light comes on and the fuel gauge drops to empty. Not repaired yet. -
Erratic Fuel Guage Operation. Also very hard to start have to punp the gas peddle. -
Fuel Gage is inaccurate. Low fuel warning will go off even though the tank is full of gasoline. -
The fuel gauge shows that the gas tank is empty even after it was just filled. After 50-100 miles, the gauge shows between 1/8 and 1/4 tank but quickly goes back to empty and and low fuel indicator light comes on. -
I put over $200 in my gas tank and within minutes of each time to the gas station the gas came out. A different dealership outside where the car was purchased, fixed the fuel sensor, now the same problem and they want me to pay $1,230. -
fuel gauge shows empty after each fill -
I too was having a very unreliable, and erratic gas gauge. My gas gauge would say it was full, when in actuality it was almost empty; and it would tell me I was on empty only miles after filling up. I have the panel that shows me an estimated miles to empty, and it seems to still work fine. Only the needle on the gas gauge is messed up. Here recently, it decided to no longer work at all, and has now fallen below the "E" mark, and just stays there. Again, my MTE gauge still works. -
fuel gauge read empty after filling up and would give inaccurate readings . . . used car dealership corrected the problem after I had purchased the vehicle -
I was getting close to empty warning (orange)light was not on. Pulled into gas station filled it up. I watched it go from about 1/2 tank to empty then the fuel warning (low) orange light came on and stayed on. I have not driven it enough since to see if it is erratic. On a side note I saw where someone else reported a winning engone my does the same and it drives me nuts! -
