How are Decklid Release Actuator issues diagnosed?
The first step to finding the cause of a decklid release actuator is to listen to the trunk as the button is pressed. Here, the technician will hear if the actuator motor is being energized when the button is pressed. If not, the fuse will be checked first, then the connector for the trunk release actuator motor will be checked for continuity and that it is energized when the trunk release is pressed. If the signal from the trunk release button reaches the connector, but the actuator motor does not function, the trunk release motor will be replaced. If the technician is still not convinced the trunk release actuator motor is faulty, he or she may bench test the actuator assembly with an external power source for verification.
How are Decklid Release Actuators replaced?
Opening the trunk is the first step of replacing the failed actuator. This will be completed during the diagnostic phase, but in the interest of clarity the process is described here. If there is no key lock cylinder for the trunk, and the trunk will not open electronically, the rear seats will be laid down, and the technician will pull the emergency release handle located in the trunk If the rear seats do not fold, the upper seatbacks will be removed, and the technician will likely have to devise a way to pull, push or turn the release lever. Once the trunk lid is open and the part is diagnosed as faulty, the inner trunk lid liner will be removed to expose the fasteners for the decklid release actuator. Removing the fasteners, one or two cables, and the electrical connection will allow the technician to remove the latch assembly, install the new part, and adjust the assembly before tightening to specifications
RepairPal Recommendations for Decklid Release Actuator issues
Some models of vehicles experience frequent failure of the decklid and liftgate release actuator and latch assembly. For these vehicles, we recommend that the replacement part is purchased from a reputable parts dealer, with no less than a three year warranty.
What to look out for when dealing with Decklid Release Actuator issues
Many models of the same make will have interchangeable decklid release actuators. It is important to verify the part number, however, because some of these latches may fit, but may have different connectors or functionality. Calling your manufacturer part counter with your VIN will typically get you the latest part number available for your vehicle.
Can I replace the Decklid Release Actuator myself?
There is nothing particularly challenging about changing the decklid release actuator, and most will find the job goes smoothly if the proper tools are available at the beginning of the job. There may be a cable or two to contend with, but even those come off with ease. Adjusting the latch is also easy, so long as patience is exercised, and nothing is rushed.
