How are oil pressure sensor issues diagnosed?
When diagnosing a possible loss of oil pressure, the technician will check the oil level first, then the engine will be inspected for oil leaks.
If the oil is full, and there are no leaks, the technician will connect a scanner to the vehicle to compare what its sensors are saying to the actual conditions. The technician will test the oil pressure sensor and associated electrical circuit, and determine if the sensor should be replaced.
How is an oil pressure sensor replaced?
If the oil pressure sensor is faulty, it will be removed and replaced. The location of the sensor varies by make and model, but it's usually near the oil filter or in the cylinder head.
Can I replace the oil pressure sensor myself?
Oil pressure warning light diagnosis should be left to a professional. There is always the possibility that the oil pressure sensor went bad, but without proper testing, starting the vehicle becomes a gamble.
