Air door actuators fail in a couple of different ways. Passengers most often notice that the temperature on one or both sides of the vehicle are incorrect. Setting the temperature, even to the far opposite range may not lead to a change in the temperature of the air coming from the vents. Also, repeated clicking of clunks from underneath the instrument panel may be another indicator of a failed actuator. Another form of failure is to notice that the air is blowing out of the incorrect vent, cannot be changed to one or more vents, or even changes only with deceleration, acceleration, bumps, or hills.

On the other hand, there are many alternatives to repairing the HVAC air door actuators for many models of vehicles, but these will typically reduce functionality and require seasonal manual changes. The symptoms listed can be replicated by a broken blend door, blockage in the air ducts, or bad sealing foam pads where the blend door seats against. Also, reprogramming or updating software of the HVAC control module may correct issues listed as well. In minor cases where an HVAC air door has failed and is accessible for replacement, this repair is very simple. Most people with a small tool set can replace the blend door in this situation. However, if the instrument panel must be removed, much deconstruction of the vehicle will take place, and the air conditioner may require discharging and recharging before the HVAC system will function properly.
