The oil pressure sensor is able to monitor this pressure and alert the computer when it drops to low. The computer can make changes to protect the engine and alert the driver of the problem.

There's no set schedule for replacement, or even a way to predict when the sensor might fail. Most vehicles will never have an issue with the oil pressure sensor, and changing the oil and oil filter on time may help prevent premature failure.

How are oil pressure sensor issues diagnosed?

When diagnosing a possible loss of oil pressure, the technician will check the oil level first, then the engine will be inspected for oil leaks. If the oil is full, and there are no leaks, the technician will connect a scanner to the vehicle to compare what its sensors are saying to the actual conditions. The technician will test the oil pressure sensor and associated electrical circuit, and determine if the sensor should be replaced.
