Check Engine Light for Running Rough and Difficulty Starting on Acura RL

Problem Description and Possible Solution

The exhaust recirculation valve (EGR) on the 1996-2012 Acura RL may fail, causing:

  • Illumination of the check engine light
  • OBD trouble codes P0401 and P1491
  • Rough idle
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Engine vibrations
  • Hesitation or stalling
  • Long cranking before engine starts
  • Failure of state or federal smog tests
  • The EGR valve has open and closed positions, and opens or closes on command from the computer.

Exhaust gases constantly pass through the valve when it is open, leaving carbon deposits on the valve. These carbon deposits may lead the the valve sticking in the open or closed position.

To correct this issue, sometimes it is sufficient to clean the valve, but replacement is recommended in all cases.

Need to know what I can do my EGR valve is bad and need to know how to replace it and fix problem please
Check enging light came on around 150,000. Car is running ok, but the code pulled was EGR valve malfunction.
I GET VERY POOR GAS MILEAGE, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON , FAILED EMISSIONS , DEALER MECHANIC SAID I NEED EGR VALVE SERVICE . WILL THIS MAKE ME GET BAD GAS MILEAGE ALONE . I DID REPLACED AIR FILTER AND NEW SPARK PLUGS
My check engine light is illuminated and I scanned it and it tells me that I have insuffecent EGR flow and am looking for advice as to take the upper manifold off and clean the lines.
same problem, EGR code at 85K, removed tube from back side of engine, cleaned out ports with drill bit (by hand) replaced tube, did not recurr - found posting on internet with pictures etc, acurazine site I think.
Having this issue now, light came on about 2 weeks ago. Doesn't effect Performance. I was told that the imntake manifold needs to be removed and all passages need to be cleaned
i replaced the egr valve and 19 miles later it was on again. now im going to clean the intake to see if that will end this problem.
Diagnostics said the egr is clogged and won't pass emissions. Told they have to remove the intake manifold and clean the egr with solvents. Quoted $630 mostly in labor.
Light came on, port was clogged, just done to my wife's 2002 on Warranty, refused to do mine on Warranty, it has been babied, oil changed every 3,000, highway miles etc. Run Premium all of the time and take great care. The gas mileage increased almost Four (4) Miles Per Gallon City and as much as Six (6) to Eight(8) on the highway. This should have been covered on warranty, Bloomington Acura did listen to me and gave me some help on the cost.

This should be a Warranty/Recall item for every 1999 Acura RL
Check engine light on due to egrsystem. I had it cleaned a year ago and just took it in for this again. I think the sensor is too sensitive...I wont pay for this again...roughly $500.00 each time.
I had to remove the entire intake manifold and cleaned the crud out with solvents. Replaced sensors that were under the manifold and redid valve seals while the surgery was under way.
I have a P0401 code - clogged EGR passages require cleaning.
Entire manifold needs to be removed to properly clean the EGR plate.
    Estimated dealer cost $640
