Checking for codes is a good place to start and now that most software upgrades on volvos are now free (not all but most updates) it would be the best place to start but it may have a fuel supply issue ie like a bad regualtor but best to be checked by a pro...

Usually the cables or the switch go bad so if you can hear the motor running then the cables or drive gears may be bad but that will require seat disassembly...

On these cars it is quite common that the shifter knob release button cracks at is hinge point causing the issue you are having check it and if you find a crack the knob needs replace...Good luck...

I agree with previous answer the transmission is the component that takes the most abuse on the car in the 100k miles think of how many times it has shifted combined with most of the type of driving in the bay area it is quite hard on it. Also the car wieghs a lot more than the other car you mention so it also adds to the issue...

Sounds like the ignition lock is bad but also needs to check the cable between the lock and the shifter it could also cause the same issue...

If you get the owners manual it will have a diagram of which fuse box it is in and also what location in the fuse box then check if it is blown and replace as nessesary...

This car doesnt have a pcv valve it has a breather box system called the oil trap it is located on the drivers side of the engine...

You should have a qualified technician look at the car to verify if the bushings are causing the noise or the struts or strut plates then make a decision based on that bushings usually have to be pretty bad to cause the noise the struts or strut plates are more often the cause...

I agree with the other answer but add that a glycol test should be performed as well to verify what caused the issue but would not flush the fluid if it looks to be in good condition. Also pull codes as certain codes will tell you whether the transmission can be saved or not...

There should be no reason to grind the pads this is usually a sign of aftermarket pads that are to hard in composition. It sounds like the pads should be replaced with a better quality pads and have the rotors checked for glazing and thickness and adress the prime concern. The cost of brake pads for factory repairs is 350.00...
