Known Problems

Valve cover gasket leaks are common after 60,000 miles. Symptoms will include oil drips under the vehicle and burning oil smell from the engine compartment.

The low coolant light may illuminate and/or the engine may overheat as a result of a coolant leak from the water pump. The leaking pump will require replacement and the entire cooling system should be inspected for leaks as it is not uncommon to find multiple leaks on higher mileage vehicles.

Overheating can cause severe engine damage. If the engine begins to overheat it is recommended to stop at the first available location and have your vehicle towed to a repair shop.

A side door window regulator may fail causing the window to stop working, in some eases falling into the door. Replacement of the failed regulator will be required to correct this concern.

A fluid leak may develop from one or more power steering hose. When a leak is being repaired, it is not uncommon for multiple hoses to be replaced.

The Check Engine Light may illuminate and/or a lack of power may be noted due to a failed high pressure fuel pump. BMW has released a service bulletin regarding this matter, the suggested repair is to replace the failed high pressure pump.

The blower final stage fan resistor is known to fail. Symptoms are the heater fan speed varies regardless of the setting, the fan will not turn off when the car is switched off, or the fan will not switch on at all.

The BMW M235i xDrive turbo engine suffers from waste gate issues which become progressively worse with normal driving and especially with harsh driving conditions.

The turbocharger uses exhaust gas to create air pressure which is then forced into the engine. When there is no demand for power, the exhaust gases are released into the exhaust through a waste gate to prevent the turbo from speeding up.

“Waste gate rattle” or “Turbo rattle” is a result of excessive movement between the waste gate and the waste gate seat. This is a progressive issue with the following symptoms:

  • Rattling at cold start
  • Rattling upon deceleration
  • Loss of power
  • Check Engine Light Illumination
  • Manufacturer Specific OBD trouble code P30FF
  • Very poor engine performance and MPG

Adjustment of the waste gate actuator can solve the issue, but the issue will return. If adjustment does not correct the issue, the turbocharger waste gate must be rebuilt with new bushings, or the turbocharger must be replaced. BMW has replaced many turbocharger assemblies under warranty to correct this issue.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 turbo engine may suffer from waste gate issues which become progressively worse with normal driving and especially with harsh driving conditions.
