Vehicle Comparison Rundown

The Kia Forte and the Subaru Impreza are both compact cars. The Kia Forte is a four-door sedan with front-wheel drive, while the Subaru Impreza is made as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback, and comes with standard all-wheel drive.

The Forte’s standard 147-horsepower engine gives up a little bit to the 152-horsepower standard Impreza engine. Unfortunately, this is the only available Impreza engine. The Forte offers a much more powerful 201-horsepower engine as an option. The Forte wins on power.

Interior space and trunk room are where the Impreza shines. In interior space, the Forte’s 96.2 cubic feet falls way short of the Impreza’s impressive 112.1 cubic feet. That’s as much interior space as some midsize cars! The Impreza sedan’s 12.3 cubic feet of trunk space does come in behind the Forte’s 14.9 cubic feet, but the Impreza hatchback leaves them both behind, with an amazing 55.3 cubic feet of room when you fold the back seats flat.

The Subaru offers the latest suite of driver assistance features as an option on every Impreza except the base models. This includes adaptive cruise control, precollision braking, lane departure and sway warning, and lane-keep assist functions. The Forte makes you buy the most expensive model to get all the safety tech. Advantage Subaru.

The Forte does have a more powerful optional engine, and its great 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is a perk. It's also the more reliable car, based on our findings. But the Impreza has a clear advantage for its all-wheel drive, usable space and safety systems.
