GM OBD Trouble Code 17
Camshaft Position Sensor Error
The Camshaft Position sensor will signal the Engine Control Module when the #1 cylinder is ready for the spark plug to fire ("top-dead-center" on compression stroke). The ECM uses the information from this sensor to help calculate fuel delivery and spark timing.
Fault Code Description
- 17 - Camshaft Position sensor error
Symptoms
- Extended cranking, possible no-start condition
Common Problems
- Not all ignition systems use cam sensors. Those that do may have a distributor- or remotely-mounted sensor, depending on the application.
- Ignition systems using a distributor and equipped with an cam sensor will normally have the sensor inside the distributor.
- Systems without cam sensors will have a remotely-mounted sensor. In some cases, these cam sensors must be properly "timed" after installation.
