1997 Mercury Sable Problems

Problem With Idle Air Bypass Valve May Cause Engine Performance Problems

If you experience difficulty starting the engine when cold, stalling at idle, or hesitations during acceleration, it may be the idle air bypass valve. This valve helps the vehicle idle steady when the accelerator pedal is not pressed.

Engine Oil Pan Gasket May Leak

The engine oil pan gasket can develop a leak. Leaking oil may accumulate on the exhaust system resulting in a burning smell. Replacing the gasket should correct this leak.

Worn Motor Mounts Can Damage AC Hoses

Worn motor mounts can cause the motor to rise during acceleration, causing a clunking noise and possibly damaging the AC hoses. Damage to the AC hoses can cause a loss refrigerant resulting in no cold air from the AC. The motor mount will need to be replaced prior to repairing the damaged hose or the problem will continue.

Ford Recalls Several 1997-1998 Vehicle Lines to Provide Proper Headlamp Aiming Instructions

Ford has recalled certain 1997-1998 Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles and 1998 Contour, Mercury Mystique, Lincoln Navigator, and Town Car models to provide owners with proper instructions on how to aim their headlamps. If there is a need to adjust the headlamps, during headlamp replacement for example, there is a lack of proper documentation on how to properly perform the adjustment. Ford will mail vehicle owners a new owner guide containing revised aiming instructions.

Ford Recalls 1997-1998 Models for Transmission Leak

Ford has recalled certain 1997 Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles and 1997-1998 Windstar vehicles for a possible transmission leak. The low-intermediate servo cover may become detached, causing a fluid leak. Fluid leaking onto the catalytic converters could cause a fire. Dealers will inspect the transmission and replace the affected servo covers.

Ford Recalls 1996-1997 Models for Park Mechanism Concern

Ford has recalled certain 1996-1997 Taurus, Windstar, Mercury Sable, and Lincoln Continental vehicles for a concern with the park mechanism in the transmission. The park pawl mechanism may not engage even though the shifter indicates the vehicle is in "Park." This could cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly and cause a crash or injury. Dealers will repair the parking pawl bracket in the transaxle.

MY 97' SABLE, was my 1st car, and i loved it like it was a luxurious car, UNTILL it started to mess up a year after i bought it. my dash-board 's electricity was shot, so the check-engine light would stay on, the car door open light would stay on, which means my interior lights would not cut off unless the car was off and sitting for an hour, and when i made right turns, my power-steering wou...
I have owned this car since 2000. Overall it has been a fairly good car. The problems I have experienced are the same ones that others seem to encounter. The transmission had to be completely rebuild at about 77,000 miles, the interior lights stay on long after the doors are closed etc. On the positive side the AC and heater work great as does the stereo and other components. It also has a nic...
