Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) Replacement

The engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) is a primary sensor that influences both ignition timing and fuel mixture. On most vehicles, it rests on the intake manifold and is usually threaded into a coolant passage.

How to Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

  1. When the engine is cool or cold, empty out a half gallon of the coolant
  2. Remove the electrical connector on the coolant temperature sensor
  3. Unscrew the old temperature sensor
  4. Install the new temperature sensor with thread sealant to prevent any coolant leaks
  5. Clean and re-connect the electrical connector to the new coolant sensor
  6. Clear the PCM of any codes and perform a Drive Cycle Test Drive to verify the repair

Note: When replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor, it is important to inspect the condition of the coolant. If it is dirty or corroded, replace it. Contaminated coolant can cause the new coolant sensor to report false readings to the powertrain control module.
