7 Useful Gifts for Car Owners

Christmas is quickly approaching, and the scramble for the perfect present is on. If you know someone who spends a lot of time in the car (ugh, commuting), gift opportunities abound.

Naturally, the internet is full of lists of wild — or wildly expensive — gift ideas for car owners. Custom floor mats, leather driving gloves or even auto-related cufflinks might seem like fun options, but let’s face it: a lot of these luxuries will never see the inside of a vehicle.

Instead, let us point you to seven useful, affordable items that a driver might actually appreciate opening up this Christmas.

1. Smartphone mount

Granted, some folks already have these, but if your friend doesn’t, a smartphone mount makes it easier to navigate and get notifications while driving without taking attention away from the road. These come in different types — they can mount with suction cups, magnets or on the AC vent — so do a little research and pick one that will be right for your driver.

2. Roadside emergency kit

An emergency kit might not light up eyes the way a new iPad would, but these packs can be lifesavers when things go wrong on the road. A quick search online shows a lot of variety in these kits, but make sure to look for one that includes at least the basic necessities.

3. Battery jumper

If you don’t want to spring for the full roadside emergency kit, a self-contained battery jumper is still a great thing to keep in a car. Odds are that every car will need a jump at some point, and it can be a challenge to flag someone down for help and line up the cars close enough. These devices simplify the process.

4. Car wash kit

The best car wash is the one done in your driveway. But it can be a pain to gather all the necessary supplies. These car wash kits come with everything you need to get the job done right, keeping your car clean and protected.

5. Faster phone charger

Most of us have at least a basic phone charger for the car, but upgrades are available. Look for a quicker charger, possibly one with multiple plug-ins to accommodate all passengers.

6. Window hammer and seatbelt cutter

Another safety item here, but it’s something everyone should carry in their cars. Nobody wants to think about getting in a wreck, but it happens, and when it does, seatbelt buckles and door mechanisms can break or get jammed. If you need to get out but can’t, having one of these tools handy can make a big difference.

7. Key finder

Ever misplace your keys? Of course, everyone does on occasion. But thanks to the miracle of the smartphone, it’s easier to find them these days. Devices like Tile attach to your key ring and let you press a button on your phone to have it make a sound so you can find it. It works in reverse, too — if you can’t find your phone, you can press the key fob to have the phone chime.

OK, OK. One fun idea.

Car air fresheners aren’t always the best gifts, but when it involves a squirrel in underpants, it gets really hard to say no. Happy holidays!
