Comedic Advertising Is Only Good for a Quick Laugh

I’m sure you’re just like me when it comes to the enjoyment of a good advertising campaign. I for one get excited to see what new commercial ads will top the charts each Super Bowl. Now, the latest campaign to grab my attention is for the new Toyota Yaris.

The boys over at Toyota have developed this really inventive HTML5 website that plays out like an interactive video. The entire campaign is focused on the fact that the Yaris is … well … a car. They do this quite cleverly by showcasing some of the many features that come with this particular model such as doors, wheels, airbags, and of course, windows. I have to admit I laughed out loud when the announcer states: “It has four windows that go up and down … standard.”

I will admit that while this was a very unique and fun way to get introduced to a new car, it ultimately and completely failed to pull me in as a consumer. Nothing about the experience pushed me to want to buy this car. It probably also doesn’t help that when I described the website to my coworker, I kept calling it a Taris. I suppose the point is to be memorable. Then again, seeing 10+ different commercials where the car zooms along an empty road doesn’t motivate me either.

I really don’t know what else they could have done to make me want this car. Have you ever witnessed a car advertising campaign that won you over? If not, what would it take?

Ads that show me how practical a car is inspire me to look at it further. With 3 kids and all, all I'm hearing is how can it make driving them and all their stuff around easier on me. Although, I enjoy an entertaining ad as well. :)
