Back To School: Your Car Needs Supplies Too!

August 31, 2017

Back to school season is upon us and whether you're heading to high school, college, or the 9-to-5 grind, your car has essentials it needs, too! While you're stocking up on highlighters and college-ruled paper, stock up on these supplies to keep in the trunk.

1. Gas can and siphon pump.  You hate to think of your teen running out of gas miles away from a gas station. Equip them to accept gas from another driver by keeping these items in their car.

2. Tire repair and changing supplies. Teach your young driver not only how to change or temporarily repair their tire, but how to do so safely. Items to keep include:

  • Spare tire and a tire repair kit
  • Tire air gauge
  • Reflective triangles or road flares.  When encountering car trouble, visibility to other drivers is key to safety.  Pack these items in your teen's trunk and teach them how and when to use them.
  • WD-40. Helps to loosen stubborn bolts.
  • Tire sealant

3. Jumper cables. You never know when you might have a dead battery.  Keep a set of jumper cables so you don't have to hope someone else will have a some when you're in need.

4. Personal Safety Items.  These items can prove helpful when stranded due to car trouble or inclement weather.

  • First aid kit
  • Drinking water and snacks
  • Extra cash
  • Emergency cell phone charger

5. Flashlight and batteries

6. Duct tape. An invaluable asset for minor repairs until you can make it to a repair shop.

7. Small fire extinguisher. Great to have in case the car catches on fire, or an errant camp fire.

8. Cold weather essentials:

  • Shovel
  • Road salt
  • Blanket
  • Extra hat, scarf & gloves

9. Maps.  Car or phone GPS apps aren't always reliable or available.  Keep maps of the states your teen regularly travels through as a low-tech backup.
