There’s a lot of chatter going on about the new 2009 Smart Car models and pricing, which are now in production in Hambach, France. While I see an increasing number of Smart Cars on the road, especially popular in a challenging parking city like San Francisco, I haven’t yet gone behind the wheel.

What Is A Tune Up?

I believe the biggest point of confusion that motorists who own modern vehicles encounter besides the Check Engine Light is whether or not they need a "tune up". A quick search of any automotive repair help forum or catch-all answer solution like Yahoo Answers will reveal any number of owners asking whether their car needs to be tuned up, what happens during a tune up, and how much it should cost.

"Cash for Clunkers" Scheme Draws Criticism

Aftermarket News is reporting today that the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) is voicing strong opposition to creating a nationwide “Cash for Clunkers” program, which lawmakers may be considering as part of any upcoming federal economic stimulus plan. In California, we're familiar with "Cash for Clunkers" programs, in which the State uses tax dollars to purchase older cars from owners, and then destroys the vehicles.

Brake Caliper Pins

Brake caliper pins attach the brake caliper to the caliper bracket on each equipped wheel. Using the pins as the form of attachment allows the caliper to “float” along the bracket, allowing even and accurate braking effort and wear.

Brake Pad Wear Sensors (Mechanical)

The mechanical brake pad wear sensors are small metal tabs on the backing plate of a brake pad. They are designed to contact the brake rotor surface and make a squealing or scraping noise when the brake pads have worn down to the point of needing replacement.

Clutch Assembly

A clutch assembly is typically a friction disc that rides on the transmission input shaft and a spring loaded pressure plate that squeezes the friction disc to the flywheel to engage the engine to the transmission. When the pressure plate is released, the clutch assembly is disengaged and the friction disc and flywheel can rotate independently.

Hydraulic Clutch System

Manual transmissions, or stick-shift/standard transmissions, are equipped with a clutch pedal that the driver presses to disengage the clutch. The clutch pedal, then, must be connected to the clutch by some system of components.
