The steering rack utilizes a gear system known as "rack and pinion" to steer the vehicle. By means of the rack and pinion gear set, the steering effort of the driver is changed from the rotating motion of the steering wheel to the linear, side-to-side motion required to turn the wheels. By design, the steering rack also multiplies the force applied by the driver to naturally reduce the driver's steering effort.
