My car wont start with the key. on 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

I have changed the starter and the key works the ignition but it is not firing the starter. I ran a straight wire to the starter and can start it that way but not with my key. What could be wrong

It is possible the ignition switch is bad.It is possible the ignition switch is bad or you have a problem with the wiring harness from the switch to the starter.check the switch out first .
