Question Asked: Accidentally Mixed Up Motor Oil Grades - Next Step?
August 22, 2010, 02:31 PM
I accidentally added a half quart of different grade of motor than what was in the engine by the same manufacturer Mobil 1. The car seem to run okay, but do I need to change the oil as soon as I can or it will not matter. My car manufacturer recommends 5-20 weight and I put in a 5-30 to top off.
Question Asked: Should I Change The Alternater If It Needs To Be Removed?
February 21, 2010, 03:07 PM
My car is going on this 12th year. Mechanic says that the
Oil Filter Housing needs to be replaced and the Alternater will
need to be pulled out to get to the Oil Filter Housing. When to Alternater
normally go? I am thinking that I can get an alternater for about $200 dollars and
the labor can be free since this item will be removed anyways? However, if alternaters
last 20 years then I will be wasting my money.
Question Asked: How Often Should Water Pumps / ThermostatsBe Changed

I am concerned that if the water pump and/or thermostat fails then my family or I could be stuff at a inconvenient time / place. This there a guideline when these items should be replaced (year and/or milage) to be prudent. This car is going on its 12th year and we plan to keep it for the foreseeable future.
Question Asked: Oil Filter Housing Gasket - How Critical - If Leak Small
November 07, 2009, 07:40 PM
If I am not losing a lot of oil how critical is it to change the Oil Filter Housing Gasket. Per dealer inspection, they recommended I do this right away for around $900. From my perspective it is cheaper to add a quart of oil between oil change intervals. It is a the bottom of the engine and seems to leave minimum oil residue on the engine top. However, I do not know if this will lead to a massive oil leak and potentially leave me stranded somewhere with the "Oil Light"? Also, can any competent mechanic do this or does this require BMW specific knowledge (i.e. do I need to have this done at a dealership)?
Question Asked: Causes for Destruction of Airbag Control Module
July 01, 2009, 09:48 PM
My 99' 328i that was "rear ended" the air bag light come on after I
took it to a reputable body shop. The air bag had not deployed when
I got "rear ended" and I do not recall the light being on when I
dropped the car off. The body shop went to the local dealer to try
to reset this light, but they were not able to do it. Dealer says the airbag control module needs to be replaced. Insurance company says this is part of maintenance. What are potential causes for the air bag module to be destroyed due to the accident and/or when the body shop was fixing the other damages caused by accident?
