My 2002 Ford Escape is doing exactly the same. So far have spent over 2k on repairs only to have the check engine light come on again this week. Misfire on cylinder #4. I have put more into this piece of crap than it is now worth, just want to get it fixed long enough to trade it in on something other than a Ford!!
Problem Reported: Ignition Misfires

The common problem for ignition misfires are ignition coils going bad. Replacement of the bad ignition coil is necessary. These should be fixed as soon as a problem is detected. Otherwise the misfire can cause damage to other components.

Problem Reported: Check Engine Light and Hesitation or Stumbling While Driving
May 27, 2010, 11:09 AM

Many customers state that whule driving their vehicle, the engine will hesitate, stumble, or lose power. In more severe cases, the EGR valve can be physically damaged. In all cases, the check engine light will be illuminated, and diagnostic trouble codes will be stored in the PCM.

Diagnosis of the issue has concluded the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor (DPFE) is at fault many times, and incorrectly measures exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) pressure.

Correction of the issue requires a diagnostic scan, identification of the faulty sensor, and, ultimately, the sensor and EGR valve may require replacement. In some models, the DPFE sensor is integrated into the EGR valve, and must be replaced together.

Car Review: 2002 Ford Escape

Worst vehicle I have ever purchased. The 6 cd changer works when it wants to, the odometer light works when it wants to. the sunroof switch does not work, so the sunroof will not seal well, so everytime it rains, it floods the inside of the vehicle. Have just had all 3 catalytic converters replaced, along with egr valve and dpfe sensor....and check engine light came on two days after i got it back from the shop and gave them over $2000 to "fix it". Have also had to change the ABS sensor, brakes, belts and it it is leaking oil on the engine and needs new rear struts. Can't wait to get it running good enough to get rid of.
