Question Asked: The starter makes a loud screeching noise and the fly wheel is damaged, too.

The mechanic said this is difficult to get to and, therefore, quoted $800 for each repair. This sounds high and I wondered if we could DIY. Not experts by any means but have worked on cars. What do you think of the estimate and cost? And, since this is an issue with these cars, why did Mercury not recall them?
Question Asked: switch for heat does not work

Blower fan works - heat comes out around the front window only. No heat on the floor, the front panel, etc. Just from where the defrost normally comes out in the front. What needs replaced and how. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Received quote of $840 to replace fuel pump in 98 Mercury Mystique. seemed high but told fuel pump is located in tank and would require removal of tank, Any comments or advice appreciated.

Anonymous - two fuel pumps were installed at the factory in a 1998 Mystique - one about $100 less than the other. As luck would have it, I got the more expensive one built in 1998 rather than 1997. Still expensive but without replacing it ourselves, most repairs are. I just wanted to know what to expect.
