Takata Recall Widens in Scope

January 26, 2011

It seems that every other day, a new manufacturer or model is added to the group affected by the Takata Airbag Recall.

The widening of the recall began in 2013 and included six automotive manufacturers. It had been discovered that the inflators used in the airbags on a number of vehicles could rupture during airbag deployment, causing shrapnel to disperse through the cabin and injure occupants.

Internal and third party test have labeled issues such as improper handling, the type of propellant used, and contamination from humidity as causes for the airbag failures, though the investigation is ongoing.

While Takata has indicated they will discontinue the usage of ammonium nitrate as a propellant in future modules, there are still vehicles being sold with the current design. There are others still whose replaced airbags are of the same design, and will have to be replaced again at a later date.

For now a growing list of automakers are initiating limited area recalls to begin replacing airbags, with priority given to older cars in high humidity areas. Below is a list of affected vehicles, more are continuing to be added.
