Our automotive experts have put together the following information about the P245A diagnostic trouble code. We've provided the common symptoms that occur when this code is set along with the frequent repairs that address the issues related to the P245A code.

OBD II Fault Code

  • OBD II P245A

OBD-II Code Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure is defined as a Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Control Circuit/Open

The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases back through the engine so that any remaining unburned fuel can be burned. The engine computer (PCM) is programmed to bypass the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler under certain driving conditions. The PCM monitors the system to ensure that the bypass valve operates as requested. If the EGR bypass valve fails to operate as requested, code P245A is stored.

Common Problems That Trigger the P245A Code

  • Damaged EGR cooler assembly
  • EGR cooler bypass valve failure
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure

This is not the purpose of the EGR system. The EGR system recirculates inert gas back into the combustion chamber to reduce cylinder temperature and lower NOx. The oxygen has been used up in the air recirculated, so it cannot aid in combustion.
