OBD-II Code Vehicle speed sensor failure is defined as a Vehicle Overspeed Condition

The Vehicle Speed Sensor tells the engine control module (PCM) how fast the vehicle is going. If the vehicle is driven over a certain speed, it will set code P0297.The PCM may put the vehicle into "limp home mode" to limit the speed that the vehicle can be driven. Repeated setting of this code may void your warranty.
