Brake Light Switch Failure May Cause ESP/BAS Warning Lights
The ESP and BAS warning lights may illuminate due to a failed brake light switch. Replacement of the failed switch should correct this concern. A recall on certain 2000-2002 models have been recalled for a related issue - for more information please click here»
The Door Locks May Cycle Rapidly
Electrical switches in the door latches can fail, causing the door locks to rapidly actuate up and down multiple times when the locks are activated by either the keyless remote or door lock switch. The affected door latch should be replaced to correct this concern.
Power Window Main Switch May Fail
The power window switch may fail and the windows will not raise. The main switch at the front center console is commonly at fault. A failed switch will require replacement.
Door Storage Pockets May Become Unglued and Fall
Door mounted storage pockets can become unglued and fall into the door.
Release Cables For Rear Seat May Stretch/Break
Release cables for the rear seat (second row of seats) tend to stretch or break requiring replacement.
"Crank no Start" Due to Failed Crankshaft Position Sensor
The crankshaft position sensor may fail. Symptoms of this are: The engine will crank—but not start—especially when the engine is warm. The car may start again if it is left to cool off, but it may run roughly or have poor performance.
"No start" Due to Anti-Theft System Fault
A no start condition may develop due to an anti-theft system fault. If the drive authorization module fails to recognize the keys, the engine will not start. In many cases, a new module and keys will be needed to correct this problem.
Power steering return hose may leak at radiator cooler fitting
The power steering return hose leaks at the radiator cooler fitting. If the clamp is not properly tightened, the hose can blow off, causing high steering effort and a mess under the hood.
The Sunroof May Jam or Not Close Correctly
The arms for the sunroof wind deflector may break; if the broken pieces are not removed, they can jam the sunroof.
Covering For Center Console May Bubble/Discolor
The covering for the center console can bubble and discolor. Replacement of the affected part is most commonly only way to repair this concern.
Exhaust Leak From Front Catalytic Converter
An exhaust leak may develop due to cracked welds on the front catalytic converter. Replacement of the catalyst is recommended; re-welding of the catalyst is discouraged because it is an emissions device.
Air Conditioning Not Cold
AC system leaks and/or a faulty evaporator temperature sensor can cause poor AC cooling. The failed sensor can prevent the AC compressor from coming on. Leaks cause a low refrigerant level, which reduces the ability to cool.
Rear Corner Panels on Sides of Tailgate May Crack/Break
The rear corner panels on either side of the tailgate (black plastic) can crack or break. They should be cut off and the adhesive removed before new panels are glued on.
Engine Oil Leak From PCV Vent Housing and/or Engine Inspection Plate
An engine Oil leak may develop from the PCV vent housing on the valve cover and/or the inspection plate on the front of the engine.
Loss of Power Steering due to Leaking Steering Rack
It is not uncommon for the power steering rack to develop a fluid leak requiring replacement of the rack assembly. Loss of power steering fluid may also cause an abnormal noise and damage to the power steering pump.
Transmission May Leak Fluid and Damage Control Module
The electrical connector at the automatic transmission may leak fluid. Over time leaking fluid could migrate through the wiring harness and damage the transmission control module. If that happens a new harness and control module may be necessary to correct the problem.
Motor Mounts Fail and Cause Vibration in Body
Motor mounts commonly fail, causing engine vibrations to be transferred to the body. Failed motor mounts should be replaced in order to prevent damage to the transmission mount.
Insulation Near Sunroof/Inside of Doors Can Peel Off
The insulation at the sunroof and on the inside of each door window glass can peel off. The loose insulation will then scrape the sunroof or window glass as it is operated. Replacement of the damaged insulation will be necessary to correct this concern.
"All Activity Module" May Cause Multiple Electrical Malfunctions
Various electrical problem may develop due to a failed "all activity module". Our technicians tell us that proper diagnoses is required to be sure any electrical faults are being caused by the failed module.
The Differential May Develop Leaks From the Seals or Cover
Leaks may develop from the differential cover and/or seals on high mileage or older vehicles. Our technicians recommend a complete reseal of the differential unit if these leaks are addressed.
Harmonic Balancer May Fail and Damage Timing Cover
The rubber bond in the harmonic balancer can decay, which causes the balancer to move and work its way toward the timing cover. If the balancer comes into contact with the timing cover while the engine is running, it will fracture and damage the cover and potentially other surrounding parts. The harmonic balancer should be inspected at every service.
Driving With Parking Brake Applied
Pad life varies and is dependent upon driving style and terrain. One common problem our technicians report is that motorists will drive with the parking brake applied; this burns up the parking brake lining and wears out the brake rotors.
Vehicle lower on one side due to cracked insulator for torsion bar
These vehicles have torsion bar-type springs for the front suspension. If the vehicle appears to be lower on one side (in front), the hard plastic insulator for the torsion bar may have cracked and split. There may also be a squeaking noise (when driving over bumps) from below the front seats if this insulator has broken.
Oil filter housing may develop oil leaks
Replace air filter when replacing failed mass air flow sensor
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor tends to fail. The engine air filter should be replaced when the mass air flow sensor is replaced; a dirty filter can allow debris to damage the new sensor.
Worn spark plug wires may develop micro cracks in insulation
As the spark plug wires age and are exposed to heat cycling, they start to develop micro cracks in the insulation around the resistors, which causes misfires and poor fuel economy.
Shutter or Rumbling When Truning at Slow Speeds
Due to slipping clutches in the transfer case, a shudder or rumbling from the center of the vehicle may occur, especially when turning at slow speeds. If the clutches are not too badly worn, changing the fluid will fix this problem. Otherwise, the transfer case will need to be disassembled to change the clutches.
Low volume fuel filter
Up to model year 2000, a low-volume fuel filter was used. An updated fuel filter must be retrofitted to prevent premature fuel pump failure.
