Known Problems

Worn engine mounts can lead to unwanted engine vibrations being transmitted to the body, most commonly with the engine idling and the transmission in reverse. Replacing the worn mount(s) should correct this concern.

The camshaft seal, located at the end of the cylinder head, has a reputation for failure on the 1990-2005 Honda Civic.

This seal wraps around the camshaft to prevent engine oil from leaking where the camshaft exits the cylinder head.

Replacing the leaky seal requires timing belt removal, so timing belt and water pump may be recommended if your vehicle is near the service interval.

The 1990-2005 Honda Civic has a known issue with engine oil leaking from the ignition distributor shaft seal.

Leakage from the shaft seal coats the electrical components of the distributor with engine oil causing:

  • Failure to start 
  • Engine randomly misfires 
  • OBD Trouble code(s) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P1336, P1337 
  • Engine vibrations  
  • Hesitation or stalling 
  • Cleaning the distributor cap and rotor can help or resolve driveability issues temporarily, but the mentioned issues will return shortly.

    Once this issue is diagnosed, the ignition distributor shaft seal must be replaced, and the distributor shaft bearing must be inspected.

    A worn (front) bushing on the rear lower control arm can cause a noise when going over bumps. Replacing the worn bushing should stop the noise.

    A fluid leak may develop from one or both front suspension struts. Replacing the struts (usually in pairs) will be necessary to take care of the problem.

    On some models Powertrain Control Module (PCM) response time for idle speed and engine timing can cause the engine to stall. A software update from Honda is required to fix this problem.

    The air cleaner case is prone to cracking. This can make it difficult to remove the screws securing the cover, making it difficult to replace the air filter. Replacing the case is often necessary to address this issue.

    On certain models the drivers seat bushings can wear out and the seat can rock back and forth. Replacing the bushings are needed to repair this issue.

    Certain manual transmissions can cause a clicking noise when turning right due to a reverse gear contacting other gears in the transmission. The transmission needs to be disassembled and new updated gears installed to stop the noise.

    On vehicles that have a sunroof, squeaking can occur. Special anti squeak tape should be applied to stop the noise.

    The air cleaner case is prone to cracking. This can make it difficult to remove the screws securing the cover, making it difficult to replace the air filter. Replacing the case is often necessary to address this issue.

    Plugged moon roof drains can cause a water leak inside the car, usually over the head of the driver or passengers head when turning a corner. Cleaning the drains will fix this problem.

    On some models the bump stop in the strut can cause a noise on turns. Replacement of the bump stop will fix this problem.
