Volvo 740 Problems

Engine -- Verified

Engine stalling/stumbling problems can be caused by a failing mass airflow sensor.

Engine -- Verified

A faulty RPM sensor can cause the Check Engine Light to come on and cause a "No Start" condition.

Drive Train -- Verified

Delayed and/or erratic shifting can be caused by the transmission kick-down cable sticking. Since the oil pan has to be removed to replace the cable, have the shop replace the transmission filter at the same time

Exhaust & Emissions -- Verified

A rattling noise from under the vehicle can be caused by a loose exhaust header pipe heat shield. Properly securing the shield should correct this concern.

Engine -- Verified

The fuel pump relay may fail resulting in a "no start" condition, the engine will crank over but will not start and run. Checking for proper fuel pressure would be the first step in diagnosing this concern.

Only have 270K miles on ours. We have had since 1991 and it is a tank. Only problems have been auxillary items, such as antenna, power window buttons, power locks, radio, blower motor, A/C. The powertrain is bulletproof. Still put in 5 quarts of oil and 5K miles later drain out 5 qts of oil.

have 331,000 miles still a great car
