2006 Saturn Ion Problems
RepairPal has identified the most common problems with the 2006 Saturn Ion based on complaints from actual vehicle owners. We'll tell you what the problem is and what it'll take to fix it.
The power steering assist may be lost intermittently along with illumination of the "power steering" warning message. In most cases, the power steering system will return to normal when the ignition is cycled off and the engine is restarted. General Motors recommends to replace the electric power steering assist motor to correct this problem. They have extended the warranty on the power steering assist motor to 10 years or 100,000 miles on most 2004-2007 Ion models. This is not a "recall" but an extension of the original warranty.
Saturn Ion three door and four door models may display the warning message "A/C off for Engine Protection" on the instrument panel. This may be accompanied by illumination of the check engine light and the temperature gauge reading cold at all times. This is a feature of the engine that is activated by the power control module when it detects the engine warming up too slowly. The OBD trouble code P0128 may also be stored.
The cause is simply a worn out thermostat that stays open at all times, preventing the engine from reaching the proper operating temperature.
Replacement of the thermostat will correct the issue.
Illumination of the Check Engine Light can be caused by a loose or worn gas cap.
