2006 Honda S2000 Problems

Known Problems

The 2000-2009 Honda S2000 engine oil pressure sensor is known to leak from normal operation.

To correct the leak, the sensor must be inspected, properly sealed and installed, or replaced with new.

Smelling burning engine oil is common on the 2000-2009 Honda S2000, and is associated with oil leaking from the valve cover. It is most common to smell the oil burning at a stop light, or just after you shut off your engine.

Engine oil leaks from the valve cover, drains down, and settles on the exhaust manifold, which burns the oil upon contact due to high exhaust gas temperatures. This creates an odor that comes through the vents, and can be smelled around the front of the vehicle. 

The valve cover gasket should be replaced in a timely fashion to prevent engine misfires resulting from oil contamination of the ignition coil, which is fairly common.

Valve cover gasket replacement will correct both the leak and the smell of burned oil at the same time. If the ignition coil or spark plug wire was soaked in oil, it will need to be cleaned or replaced to stop or prevent misfires.

The camshaft seal, located at the end of the cylinder head, has a reputation for failure on the 2000-2009 Honda S2000.

This seal wraps around the camshaft to prevent engine oil from leaking where the camshaft exits the cylinder head.

Replacing the leaky seal requires timing belt removal, so timing belt and water pump may be recommended if your vehicle is near the service interval.

There are known convertible top issues.

On certain models the PCM misinterprets data from the coolant sensor and causes the Check Engine light (MIL) to illuminate. A software update from Honda will repair this problem.

There is an issue when the ignition switch is on for about four or more hours. The powertrain control module (PCM) can misinterpret serial data and cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. A software update from Honda will repair this problem.

The air/fuel sensor, located in the exhaust system, may be damaged by moisture in the exhaust resulting in illumination of the Check Engine Light. Replacing the damaged air/fuel sensor and updating the powertrain control module (PCM) software should correct this concern.

A problem can occur with a vibrating expansion valve in the AC system and cause a whistling noise from the passengers vent. Replacing the expansion valve with an updated valve from Honda will repair this problem.

The S2000 is set up with aggressive alignment settings and soft tire compounds to enhance handling. These alignment settings and soft tire compounds result in tires wearing out earlier than anticipated. This is a compromise made to have a car with exceptional handling characteristics.

Some S2000's can develop a problem with the transmission popping out of fourth gear. A new updated fourth and fifth gear assembly will repair the problem. The transmission will have to be removed and disassembled for this repair.
