2001 Ford Crown Victoria Problems
Coolant Leak and/or Engine Overheating Due to Cracked Intake Manifold
The composite (plastic) intake manifold may crack near the thermostat housing and cause a coolant leak. Ford released an updated manifold that was reinforced to prevent a recurrence. No recall was issued for this problem but Ford did extend the warranty to seven years on some models from the date of purchase.
Police/Fleet/Natural Gas Models May Experience Lower Ball Joint Wear
Certain police, fleet, and natural gas models may experience lower ball joint wear, requiring replacement of the front ball joints. Ford has issued a recall on certain vehicles for this condition. Please contact your local dealer for more information.
Engine Oil Leak from Right Head Gasket
An oil leak may develop from the the right side head gasket. Oil from this type of leak will commonly drip onto the starter. Our technician tell us an updated head gasket is available to correct this concern.
Heater Hose Outlet May Leak Coolant at Back of Intake Manifold
The heater hose outlet may leak coolant at the back of the intake manifold. Sometimes this is misdiagnosed as a leaking intake manifold gasket because it resembles a leaking manifold.
Steering Gear May Fail
The steering gear may have an internal problem that makes turning to one side difficult; it may need to be replaced. A wheel alignment is needed after the steering gear is replaced.
Starter Failed
Starter failed on my 2001 crown victoria, Dec' 2011. Car would produce one loud click (the pinion bearing coming out), but not turn over. After several attempts it would eventually turn over. Battery is six years old so it's not putting out as well as it use to... Pulled the starter out (3 bolts, what a PAIN.. hint: use a 1/4" socket wrench for the top bolt!) and tested with just battery, same problem. Had it tested at the auto parts store...
