No Start and/or Stalling Due to Failed Distributor Pick Up Plate
Vehicles equipped with a 4 cylinder engine may develop a no start or stalling condition, most commonly caused by a failed distributor pickup plate.
Erratic Speedometer Operation
Erratic operation of the speedometer may be noted on vehicles equipped with a passenger side motorized seat belt. This is generally caused by a failed Passive Belt Control Module (PBCM). Our technicians tell us that if the speedometer functions correctly with the PBCM disconnected the PBCM should be replaced.
Noise From Rear Suspension
A noise from the rear suspension may be noted at slow speeds over uneven road surfaces. This can be caused by a cracked or broken rear torsion bar. A damaged torsion bar will require replacement.
Engine Oil Leaks
4 cylinder engines may develop oil leaks from the following areas: Camshaft plug, Camshaft seal, valve cover gasket, cylinder head gasket, and distributor.
Stalling or Low Engine Idle Speed Due to Dirty Throttle Body
A dirty throttle body can cause a low idle speed resulting in a stalling condition. Our technicians recommend cleaning the throttle body at 15k intervals to help minimize this condition.
Driving in Snow May Force Serpentine Belt off Pulleys
When driving through deep snow the serpentine belt may be forced off the pulleys. If pulley alignment is found to be OK a shield is available to prevent snow from coming in contact with the belt.
Engine knocking noise
4 cylinder engines may develop a cold engine knock that may last for 3-5 minutes and is often mis-diagnosed as a lifter noise. Our technicians tell us in most cases the noise is coming from the piston area and is not a reliability or durability concern.
Engine Oil Leaks
Engine oil leaks may develop from the following areas: Valve cover gaskets, cam plugs at rear of the cylinder head, cam seals, front crankshaft seal, and the oil filter bracket. Leaking seals and gaskets should be replaced. Due to mis-machining of the mating surfaces, as special gasket is required to correct the oil filter bracket leak.
Exhaust leak at header pipe
An exhaust leak and/or chirp type noise may develop from the exhaust manifold to header pipe connection. Our technicians tell us that replacing the exhaust seal ring and flange springs, along with sizing the header pipe flange will generally correct this concern.
Fuel pump failure
The fuel pump may fail resulting in a no start condition. Our technicians recommend replacing the fuel filter whenever the fuel pump is replaced. Failure to replace the fuel filter may cause the replacement pump to fail prematurely.
Various driveability issues
4 cylinder engines may develop one or more of the following concerns: Erratic idle, hesitation, and lack of power. Common causes include: Faulty throttle position sensor, brittle or broken wires & corroded or spread terminals in the engine wire harness, cracked or swollen vacuum hoses, and oil contaminated o2 sensors. Our technicians recommend a complete inspection including diagnoses of any stored fault codes if these driveability concerns occur.
Fuel leak from injector o-ring
Hard starting, rough idle, black exhaust smoke, or poor fuel mileage may indicate a fuel leak from the area of the fuel injector. Our technicians tell us that in most cases the injector o-ring is the cause of these leaks.
Corrosion at Coolant Temperature Sensor
4 Cylinder engines, with a hard starting condition when cold and illumination of the Check Engine Light may have corrosion build up on the engine coolant temperature sensor. Our technicians tell us that the coolant sensor and pigtail should be replaced to correct this issue.
Engine vacuum leaks
4 cylinder engines may develop driveability issues and illuminate the Check Engine Light due to engine vacuum leaks. These vehicles use plastic vacuum lines which can become brittle due to heat and age. Care should be taken when replacing these lines as some may have a restrictor orifice molded inside. If lines are replaced without including the restrictors driveability issues will remain.
Updated idle air control valve
4 Cylinder engines may exhibit an erratic idle with the Check Engine Light illuminated. These conditions are most commonly present during cold engine operation in rainy weather. Our technicians tells us that there is an updated idle air control valve available to correct this concern.
Hesitation caused by plugged EGR back pressure tube
A hesitation on acceleration may be caused by a plugged EGR valve back pressure tube. EGR valve replacement is not generally required.
Snapping noise from exhaust pipe when cooling off
A loud snapping noise may be heard from the exhaust after the engine has been shut off. Replacing the exhaust pipe may be necessary to correct this issue.
Driveability concerns due to intake valve deposits
Various driveability concerns can be caused by deposits on the back of the intake valves. Fuel injector cleaner has shown reasonable results cleaning light deposits.
Loss of speed control after sensor/transaxle replacement
An intermittent loss of speed control can happen soon after the transaxle input or output speed sensor has been replaced. The problem is most likely caused by spread connector terminals. Our technicians tell us the connectors should be replaced if this is the case.
Poor connection at right window and convertible top switches
The right power window and/or convertible top may stop working intermittently due to a connection issue at the switch. Our technicians tell us that a switch repair package is available to correct this issue.
Loose or damaged frame rail grounds
Various electrical issues can be caused by a damaged or loose frame rail ground. Damaged grounds should be repaired as necessary to correct these issues.
Accessories stay on after igntion is truned off
Some vehicles may develop a condition where the accessories stay on after the ignition switch is turned to the off or lock position. Our technicians tell us that replacing the ignition switch should repair this issue.
HVAC Air Flow Switching to Defrost When Accelerating
The AC/heater (HVAC) system may unexpectedly switch to the defrost mode when accelerating. This system is operated by engine vacuum and should be inspected for any vacuum leaks if this problem develops. There is also a revised vacuum check valve available to address this concern.
Air Conditioning Not Cold
The powertrain control module (PCM) may fail resulting in a lack of AC cooling. The lack of cooling could be caused by evaporator freeze-up due to the AC compressor staying on continuously or conversely, not coming on at all. Proper diagnoses of the PCM should be performed before replacing it for this concern.
Odor from HVAC vents
Some vehicles may develop a musty odor coming from the HVAC system, Dodge has issued a cleaner/disinfectant and a coating for the evaporator designed to inhibit bacterial growth.
Various transmission issues
Automatic transmissions can exhibit a variety of shifting and noise concerns due to failure of internal parts. Our technicians tell us that a complete inspection of all internal parts should be performed if the transmission is disassembled for overhaul. Numerous updated part are available for this transmission.
Squeak noise from shifter
On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions a squeak noise may occur when shifting into or out of gear. Our technicians tell us that in most cases replacing the shifter assembly will correct this problem.
Connector issue with speed sensor
The connector on the input and/or output speed sensors on the automatic transmission may become damaged causing intermittent loss of speed control. There are wiring repair kits available to repair this issue.
Transmission fluid contamination
Incorrect, worn, or contaminated automatic transmission fluid can cause shifting issues, noted at speeds over 40mph. Our technicians tell us that repairs to correct this condition include changing the fluid and filter, driving the vehicle for 10miles and changing the fluid a second time.
Manual transmission locked
The manual transmission may become locked in neutral or reverse after shifting out of reverse. Our technicians tell us there is a stronger reverse detent spring available to correct this issue.
Engine Start and Stall and/or Transmission Stuck in Second Gear
Vehicles may develop a start and die out condition or a transmission that defaults to second gear. Our technicians tell us that the transmission control module (TCM) may be at fault and require replacement. If the TCM is replaced the pinion factor should be reset and the quick learn procedure performed.
Limp-in condition due to faulty transaxle input speed sensor
The automatic transmission my default to a "limp-in" mode due to a faulty transaxle input speed sensor. Our technicians tell us there is an updated speed sensor available to correct this condition.
Turbocharger failure
The turbocharger may fail resulting in any of the following: Excessive smoke from the exhaust, lack of power, or grinding or scraping noise from the turbocharger. Our technicians tell us the most common causes of turbocharger failure are lack of oil changes, hard acceleration when the engine is cold, and lack of a cool down period are high speed driving or excessive loads.
Engine Knocking Noise From Carbon Buildup
Carbon buildup on the top of the piston is common. Over time this can lead to symptoms varying from light ticking to knocking noises. Performing a fuel injector cleaning procedure can often help the condition by removing some of the piston top deposits.
Timing belt replacement
4 cylinder engine timing belts can be affected by driving in very hot climates. Our technicians tell us that replacement should be considered before the recommended 60K interval. Replacement timing belts have been designed for greater durability. It is also recommended the belt tensioner be replaced whenever the timing belt is replaced.
Tappet/lash adjuster Noise
A tappet/lash adjuster noise may be noted from the 3.0L engines. Our technicians tell us that proper testing of the lash adjusters should be performed before replacing any parts. A full crankcase of clean engine oil is necessary before attempting to determine if any lash adjusters are bleeding down and causing a noise concern.
Belt Nosie Due to Alternator Pulley Misalignment
Alternator pulley misalignment on 4 cylinder engines may result in belt noise and/or the belt "walking" partially off the pulley. Our technicians tell us that replacement of the AC and alternator mounting bracket, alternator belt, and if necessary, installation of washers to align the alternator pulley may be necessary to correct this issue.
Normal fluctuation of temperature gauge
Some 4 cylinder engines may exhibit some fluctuation of the temperature gauge during cold weather conditions. Our technicians tell us this is a normal condition.
Strut mount bearing noise
A squeak noise may be noted from the strut mount area when turning. The repair involves replacing the strut mount assembly.
Squeak noise from front suspension
A squeak noise may be noted during front suspension jounce and rebound travel. Our technicians tell us that replacing the sway bar bushings commonly corrects this concern.
Creaking Noise From Steering Column
A slight creaking noise may be noted from the upper end of the steering column when turning left or right. Our technicians tell us that the repair is to remove some material from the upper steering column shroud.
Coolant Leak From Water Pump Seals
4 cylinder engines may develop a coolant leak from the water pump area. The sealant used on the water pump may degrade over time, newer models have an upgraded rubber gasket. Our technicians tell us that the o-ring where the water pump housing mounts to the engine block may also leak which can appear to be a leaking water pump.
Clicking noise from transaxle
A clicking noise may develop from the left front of the vehicle that varies with vehicle speed. Our technicians tell us that the cause may be the output gear bolt and stirrup contacting the rear cover of the transaxle. The repair involves replacing the transaxle rear cover, fluid filter, and any damaged output gear retention components.
Replacement of the power steering pressure switch o-ring
A power steering leak may develop if the power steering pressure switch is serviced without replacing the o-ring seal.
out side lights don't work
Outside lights don't come on when the headlight switch is turned on. Brake light don't work either. Replaced burnt out brake light bulbs, and headlight switch. I have power to the switch, and the wires and grounds look good. The schematic shows a lamp-outage moduale, but can't find it or find out what it does.
