The transmission overdrive relay often fails, preventing the transmission from shifting into overdrive. In some cases the Overdrive light may stay all the time or not come on at all. The relay is located behind the center console, just left of the glove box. Before replacing the relay it is crucial that the wire leading to the overdrive solenoid is inspected to ensure it isn't shorting out on the transmission case. Failure to check this may lead to a failure of a newly installed relay.

Most reported 1990 Volvo 240 problems
Engine drivability problems can be caused by a failing mass air flow sensor.
Very common issue. Seems to occur more often when the vehicle has been driven then parked for less than a half hour. Then you try to start the engine and it cranks over fine but doesn't start. The fuel pump relay fails to provide power to the fuel pump due to a crack in the relay circuit board.
If you look on the relay there's a date code. If the date is older than 1991, replace it no matter what. Volvo came out with a newer relay after 1990-91 and the later relays are better made.
As the fuses age, they can corrode and break. They need occasional inspection and possible replacement. When addressing this issue, we recommend replacing all the fuses with new fuses and cleaning the terminals that hold the fuses.
