1997 GMC 2500 Pickup Problems
Power Door Lock Actuators May Fail
The power door lock actuators may become slow to operate or stop working completely and require replacement.
Power Brake Units May Leak Fluid From Hydro-Boost Unit
Power brake systems using "hydro-boost" may leak power steering fluid from the hydro-boost unit located behind the brake master cylinder. Replacement of the hydro-boost unit is the common repair to correct this concern.
Inside/Outside Door Handles May Break
The inside and outside door handles are prone to breaking.
ABS Warning Light On and/or Erratic ABS Operation
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) front wheel speed sensors are prone to failure. When a sensor fails, the ABS warning light may illuminate and/or the ABS system may activate erratically.
Coolant Leak & Engine Overheating
A coolant leak may develop from the water pump. This can result in an engine overheating condition. A leaking water pump will require replacement.
Abnormal Noise From AC Compressor
The air conditioning compressor may develop an abnormal noise and require replacement. We recommend that whenever an AC compressor is being replaced for a noise condition, a filter kit should be installed to prevent any metal particles in the system from damaging the new compressor.
Overheating and/or Coolant Loss Due to Leaking Quick-Connect Fitting
The quick-connect fittings for the heater hoses tend to leak engine coolant. This problem commonly occurs because the metal housing has become brittle, which can break and cause leaks.
Intake Manifold Gasket May Leak Coolant or Engine Oil
The intake manifold gasket may develop and external engine oil or coolant leak. In some cases, an internal coolant leak may occur causing coolant to mix with the engine oil. Running the engine with a coolant/oil mix may result in engine damage. Replacing the intake manifold gasket should correct this issue.
Windshield Wipers May Fail Due to Faulty Wiper Motor Control Board
The windshield wipers may not work intermittently due to a faulty wiper motor control board. Our technicians tell us that lightly taping on the wiper motor when the fault occurs should temporarily get the wipers working again. Some vehicles were recalled for this problem and some were not. You will need to check with your local dealer to find out if a specific vehicle was included.
The Fuel Pump May Fail Causing the Engine to Stall or Crank Over But Not Start
The fuel pump may fail causing the engine to stall and not restart. Our technicians recommend replacing the fuel filter every 30,000 miles to help prevent undue strain on the fuel pump.
Improper HVAC Temperature and/or Air Delivery Due to Failed Mode Door Actuator
One or more heater & AC (HVAC) air delivery and/or temperature mode door actuator may fail. This can result in incorrect air delivery or temperature. If this occurs, fault code(s) stored in the HVAC control module should be available to assist with diagnoses.
Highter Than Nornal Idle Due to Vacuum Leak
An engine vacuum leak may develop from the throttle body gasket causing a higher than normal idle speed. Failed gaskets should be replaced.
Deposit Buildup on Throttle Body May Cause Low Engine Idle
The engine idle may be lower than normal due to deposits built up on the throttle body, which can restrict air flow at idle. To low of an engine idle can result in a stalling condition. Performing a throttle body service will generally correct this concern.
Check Engine Light With Code P1870
Vehicles equipped whit a 4 speed automatic transmission may develop a harsh 1-2 shift and/or illumination of the Check Engine Light with code P1870 stored. This can be caused by wear of the bore for the TCC isolator and regulator valves in the valve body. This condition does not commonly occur until the transmission reaches normal operating temperature. If the valve body is worn, replacement will be necessary to correct this concern.
Noise and/or Dead Battery Due to failed Alternator
The alternator may fail causing the battery to go dead, or an abnormal noise may develop. The dash warning light may or may not illuminate. A failed alternator will require replacement.
