Q: won't shift into 2nd gear on 1991 Volkswagen Jetta

I have a 1991 vw jetta gl and it won't shift into 2nd gear. it doesn't make any crazy noise or anything it just won't lock into 2nd.

It's best to get the battery, charging and starting system checked to see if the issue is with the starter, battery cables or ignition switch circuit. As for the shifting, you'll want to have the shifter and linkage checked for proper adjustment otherwise it may be an internal issue in the transmission.

Have your mechanic check the voltage to the starter, here are some instructions for testing:
its manual... also!!! it won't start... it sounds like it wants to but it doesn't catch... battery is good and alternator is good... you can push start it with no problem.... i'm thinking its the starter... any thoughts??
yes i am with the help of a family member that's a mechanic. his specialty are toyotas and hondas... but we should be able to difficult is it to change the linkage??
i had the same problem, the speedometer cable shifted and blocked access to 2nd gear.. we took it out and it shifts fine now..
