Why would my car be chugging and dying only in drive, not in any other gear?

(1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera)
I can drive in reverse or put it in neutral, but as soon as i put it in drive or 1st or 2nd gear, the car will chug after about 1200 rpm, also, if i stop, then go again the car will chug and die.
Also i hooked it up to a device it was talking about, drive-code 26

Code 26 refers to a quad driver. I won't bore you with the specifics, but unless you are very experienced with wiring and computers I don't recommend that you attempt to fix this on your own. I would recommend you to have it properly diagnosed at a repair shop.

So would you say that it would require a new computer?

It is possible, but a bad power or ground, corroded wire or connection could also be the cause.

Alright, but would this fault be the cause of my car chugging and dying?
