If the fluid level is correct and the shift linkage is not bent or out of adjustment then unfortunately the problem is most likely in the transmission. A fellow I work with has a similar problem with his Ranger and a transmission shop fellow told him he may be able to "fix" the transmission in the car. I forget if he said there was a gasket or diaphragm that goes out. Bring your Ranger to a transmission shop that has experience with Ford transmissions.
