Q: why is the water being pushed back in the overflow bottle then out on the ground on 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

the water is bubbling in the reservoir bottle but its not hot the car is not overheating. once the water gets pushed into the reservoir bottle it goues out onto the ground.
The pressure cap on the surge tank may have failed, allowing the engine coolant to boil at normal operating temperature. More likely though, combustion gases are entering the cooling system from a failed head gasket. A block check solution should be used to check for combustion gases in the engine coolant. alternately an exhaust gas analyzer can be used to sniff for combustion gases in the surge tank. The relief pressure of the pressure cap on the surge tank can be tested with a pressure cap tester. It should hold 15 PSI. Most head gasket failures occur due to engine overheating that can cause engine warpage. A single overheating event is all that is necessary to cause a head gasket failure.
