Why is my gas tank leaking from the front? Is there a logical reason?

(1997 Chevrolet Lumina)
in Freeburg, IL on April 02, 2012
I came out of the store yesterday and noticed a puddle under my car. I swiped my hand through the puddle and smelled it, it was gas. A steady stream of gas was coming from the front of the gas tank. It did not seem to be leaking from any type of hose, however; could not get far enough under the car to see where it was coming from.

I had a 97 Chevy Lumina before with the same problem and it wound up being a hole in the gas tank about at the half way point.

Someone please help!

I WOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION>>> It's possible the fuel line is cracked or became damaged.

It's parked in the driveway and I am waiting for a mechanic to come look at it.
