Why is my car overheating?

(2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
My 2006 Monte Carlo 3.9 LTZ just started with the overheating/engine shut down message yesterday. I had to turn the heat on in my car to shut it off. I have also noticed the fan on my car will start running after I shut it off. Would this be a plugged radiator? If so, what can be done to unplug it?
What seems to make the problem better or worse? New problem
How long have you had this problem? Once or twice a month maybe it's rare

It is impossible for us here online to determine what’s causing the engine overheating problem - this requires *hands-on* testing / evaluation.
