Q: why dose the transmission stop shifting properly after a hour at highway speeds on 1990 Mercedes-Benz 350SDL

The problem happens after driving at higway speeds for apbout a hour then the transmission will downshift onto lower gears and will not go back into 4th

Unfortunately this is a very difficult question to answer without seeing the car and more information. However there are a few things that could cause this. When you say it will down shift to lower gears do you mean all of the sudden or like it suppose to. if it happens all of the sudden you most likely have a problem with your governor. Other than some valve body and modulator issuses, these tranmissions are built very well and normaly don't have symtoms unless there is internal damage. A trans service might help as there is probably debris in the sump and restricting flow in the filter. Again not an easy question to answer without more info. Good Luck
